I had the pleasure of photographing one of the sweetest elopements at Lawrence City Hall this past summer! From the moment I picked up Dalida for their first look, I knew this was going to be a day filled with love, laughter, and more than just paperwork. In this blog, I am sharing how Dalida and Fally made their City Hall Wedding so much more than a day of paperwork!

What is a City Hall Wedding?

City Hall weddings offer a unique blend of intimacy and simplicity, making them perfect for couples who want a meaningful, no-fuss ceremony.

Contrary to the minimalist stereotype, these weddings can be personalized to reflect your style and love story. From chic outfits to beautiful floral accents, there are countless ways to make your City Hall wedding feel special. Consider adding personal touches like private vows, a celebratory meal, or even a post-ceremony photoshoot.

The best part? You can skip the stress of a large wedding and focus on the moments that truly matter—just you, your partner, and your love.

First Look in the Park with Dalida and Fally

The day started with a first look at the park right in front of City Hall. Dalida and Fally wanted to make this moment extra special, so we met up at the park before their ceremony. I stood back and gave them the space to enjoy this intimate moment together, capturing the raw emotion as they saw each other for the first time on their wedding day.

They also exchanged private vows, and I stayed far enough away to give them that moment while still getting some beautiful, candid shots!

This is one of the reasons I love elopements—there’s no pressure to follow tradition, and you can create moments that feel personal and true to your love story. See another fav elopement at the courthouse, here!

A City Hall Wedding is More Than Just Paperwork

When people hear “City Hall Elopement,” they usually picture a couple deciding to get married at the last minute, a quick signing of papers, and maybe a couple of photos. But it doesn’t have to be that way! You are finally marrying the love of your life, and although it’s not a huge luxurious celebration, that doesn’t mean the day has to be any less meaningful or personal.

For Dalida and Fally, we turned their City Hall elopement into a full experience. After the first look and vow reading, they had their ceremony outside with the Justice of the Peace. Their family was there to witness the moment, and we captured a big family group shot afterward to celebrate.

Cake, Champagne, and a Little Extra Sparkle

After the ceremony, we took some gorgeous bridal portraits of the two of them, and then it was time for the cake-cutting. They brought a delicious cake from Tripoli Bakery, and I came prepared with everything else they needed. Plates, cutting knives, serving utensils—you name it. I always want to make sure my couples don’t feel like they’re missing out on those little details that make the day feel special.

The couple was gifted custom champagne glasses with their names on them, which made their celebratory toast even more meaningful. We used sparkling cider, but someone also surprised them with champagne, so it was a fun little pop to mark the occasion.

Perks of Planning a City Hall Wedding with Your Photographer

What made this elopement extra special was how much we planned together. I had photographed their engagement session earlier in the year, so we had already formed a good connection. We even got to hang out at a mutual friend’s pizza party, which helped me get to know them more.

When we had a brainstorming call to plan their elopement, I could tell they wanted something more than just a quick City Hall ceremony. Based on what I had learned about them, I suggested various options, including a private vow reading, which they hadn’t even thought about! They were so grateful for the ideas I brought to the table, and it was clear they didn’t know they could incorporate all these little touches into their day.

That’s one of the things I love about being an elopement photographer—helping couples realize that they can make their day as unique and special as they want. Whether it’s a private vow reading, a first look, or bringing along all the essentials for a cake cutting, I’m here to make sure your day feels like *your* day.

It’s Your Day—Make It Yours

If you’re thinking about eloping, don’t settle for just signing papers. You can still have all those beautiful, meaningful moments without the pressure of a big wedding. Whether it’s just the two of you or a small group of family, I’m here to help you brainstorm, plan, and capture every special moment. Your elopement should feel like more than just a transaction—it’s a celebration of your love.
